The rankings are still there when you check. The enquiries aren't. Here's what changed, and why doing more of the same content won't fix it.

Google AI Overviews: Why You Still Rank but Lose the Clicks
You did everything right. You wrote the content, earned the rankings, and held page one for the searches that bring you business. For years that was the whole game. Rank well, get found, win the work.
Lately the maths has stopped adding up. The rankings are still there when you check. The enquiries are not. And nobody can quite tell you why.
What actually changed
Google no longer just lists results. For a growing share of searches, it writes its own answer and puts it at the very top of the page, above everything else. It's called an AI Overview, and it's built partly from the content on sites like yours.
So a customer types their question, reads Google's summary, and has what they came for. Your page is still ranking underneath. They simply never reach it, because the answer arrived before they got there.
You haven't dropped. You've been skipped.
This is happening at scale, and fast
This isn't a rare case affecting a handful of searches. AI Overviews now appear on close to half of all Google searches, up sharply in the space of a year.
The effect on clicks is the part worth watching. Pew Research tracked tens of thousands of real searches and found that when an AI Overview appears, people click a normal result about 8% of the time. Without one, it's 15%. Roughly half the clicks gone, on the searches where Google answers for itself.
Ahrefs looked at 300,000 keywords and measured the drop for the top-ranked page specifically. Even in position one, the best spot there is, clicks fell by 58% when an AI Overview sat above it. Being first stopped meaning what it used to.
The businesses feeling this most are often the ones who did the content work properly. Useful, well-written pages that answer real questions are exactly the pages Google draws its summaries from. You built the thing now being used to keep people from reaching you.

Rankings were never the point
It's worth saying, because a lot of search advice still misses it. Ranking was only ever a means to an end. The end was being found and chosen by someone who needs what you do. A ranking that no longer earns the click is a trophy, not a result.
That changes what you should measure. Position on the page tells you less every month. What matters now is whether you're visible in the answer people actually see, whether your business is named inside it, and whether the searches that still send real clicks are the ones you show up for.
What to do about it
There's a way through this, and it isn't writing more of the same content faster.
The first move is understanding which of your pages feed these AI answers, and how to be cited inside them rather than buried beneath them. Being named in the overview is the new version of ranking first, and the brands that manage it see more clicks, not fewer, than the sites sitting just below the answer.
The second is knowing which searches still behave the old way. Not every query gets an AI Overview. Plenty still send traffic to the pages that rank, and those are worth defending and winning. The skill is telling one kind of search from the other, and putting your effort where the clicks still are.
The third is measuring the right thing, so you can see this happening rather than guess at it. Rankings alone will keep telling you everything's fine while the enquiries quietly fall. Visibility, clicks and enquiries together tell you the truth.
This is the work we do. We look at where your visibility is leaking, which searches have quietly stopped paying out, and what it takes to be found in a version of search that keeps changing shape. If the rankings look fine but the enquiries don't, that gap is exactly what we exist to close.
FAQs
What is a Google AI Overview?
It's an AI-written summary that Google places at the top of the search results for many queries, above the normal listings. It answers the searcher's question directly, often using information drawn from ranking web pages.
Why has my website traffic dropped even though my rankings haven't?
Because ranking and getting clicked are now two different things. If an AI Overview answers the query at the top of the page, many people never scroll to the results underneath, so a page can hold its position while receiving far fewer visits.
How much do AI Overviews reduce clicks?
Independent studies have found a significant fall. Pew Research observed click rates on normal results dropping from around 15% to 8% when an AI Overview is present, and Ahrefs measured a 58% fall in clicks to the top-ranked page in the same situation.
How often do AI Overviews appear?
They now show on close to half of Google searches, and that share has risen sharply over the past year. The exact figure moves constantly and varies by topic and query type.
Can I stop Google using my content in AI Overviews?
There's no reliable way to rank normally while opting out of AI Overviews, since they're built from the same index. The more productive approach is to be cited and named within the answer, which can send qualified clicks, rather than trying to be excluded.
How do I stay visible as AI changes search?
Focus on being referenced inside AI answers, identify which of your searches still send real clicks and defend those, and measure visibility and enquiries rather than rankings alone. On Google, this is still good SEO rather than a separate discipline.
